Local volunteers step up to help fight Covid-19 in Hackney Wick

There has been an upsurge in community-led action to help the local response to Covid-19 in Hackney Wick. Here we share some inspiring examples of voluntary and community action, and highlight how local residents and organisations can work together in the coming weeks.

Wick Award – your local community partnership – is helping co-ordinate and mobilise this direct action by local volunteers and small community groups.

Volunteers yesterday delivered invaluable supplies of food, household goods, gas and electricity key recharging to a family who has a member very ill at Homerton Hospital.

TRAs, local business and residents working together

Here are some of the many other examples of people helping support their local community:

The Tenants and Resident Associations on local estates (including Gascoyne1 and 2, Herbert Butler and Leabank) have organised WhatsApp groups and have been able to get lists of vulnerable residents and get food/medicines to them.

Offers have been made from local cafes and businesses to make meals for vulnerable residents. A local environmental project has offered their van for bulk shopping.

Marks and Spencer food has been shared to residents on Herbert Butler estate.

A local vicar has got in touch with many members of the Wick community known to be older and potentially isolated.

How Wick Award is helping

Wick Award is helping print off leaflets offering support for use by local groups, arranging verification and identification of safe volunteers, helping stock food parcels, linking people to the latest advice and relevant organisations such as the Hackney Volunteer Centre, Hackney Quest and the Community Pharmacy.

Funding boost for Hackney Wick

Local Trust (the funder of initiatives such as Wick Award) have released an additional £50,000 to help the response to Covid, which is an important boost to the local area. More details coming soon on how this can be used

Supporting vulnerable residents during the COVID-19 outbreak

During these exceptional times, Wick Award will be doing everything we can to support residents in Hackney Wick, especially vulnerable groups. We will be sharing key information and guidance through our website and  social media.

What is Wick Award doing during COVID-19?

We are working in close partnership with key stakeholders including:

  • Tenants and Residents Groups on estates across the ward;
  • Groups providing services to older people in the borough;
  • Hackney Council;
  • Local community groups.

Who are we aiming to support?

We are supporting all residents in Hackney Wick, but particularly the vulnerable. These include people who are at risk and need to self-isolate and practice ‘social distancing’ because of Coronavirus, such as:

  • Older people living alone or with a partner
  • People with underlying health conditions
  • Pregnant women
  • Older people in sheltered accommodation
  • Vulnerable adults, including adults with learning needs who live independently.

What support are we aiming to provide?

We’re aiming to provide support to enable the activities of daily life to continue as well as possible for those who are self-isolating during the coronavirus outbreak. This support includes:

  • Electric key recharging
  • Mobile phone top-ups
  • Food shopping delivery
  • Food parcels for those in need of financial assistance
  • Medication delivery
  • Specialist supplies including batteries for hearing aids
  • Recycling bags

What we’ve done so far

So far we have:

  • Worked with trusted local partners including youth and community organisations , church groups and older people’s clubs in order to identify people at risk.
  • Brought in food supplies to support residents’ groups to distribute to vulnerable people where needed
  • Engaged with managers of sheltered housing schemes in Hackney Wick
  • Requested Well Street Tesco to offer elderly shoppers opportunity to shop during a designated quiet period when other shoppers are restricted.
