Community Lunch at Gascoyne 2

The Gascoyne 2 Community Lunch is a free-lunch with no strings attached. Everyone is welcome to attend and share a hot and healthy meal prepared and served by local volunteers.

The lunch was the initiative of members of Gascoyne 2 Over Fifties. “We just wanted to get everyone together to make new friends, get a good meal and find out what’s going on”. Sylvia

The lunch is prepared by volunteers from food donated by supermarkets and coordinated by The Felix Project

Sharon, Head Cook, never knows what will be in the delivery until the food arrives but always comes up with crowd-pleasing menus.

What the guests say

“ I love coming here and always look forward to chatting to new friends.  I found that I’d lost my appetite when I lost my husband so it’s nice to have company” Cathy.

“They always look after us here. You feel like you’re being looked after” Pauline

“I find it a struggle to cook for myself. This is a great idea” Frank.

Since the lunch started in June there are about 25 regular guests but always room for more.

Wise Wick Community Research Project

Social isolation and loneliness is recognised as a problem for individuals as well as communities and is a cause of serious health problems.
Staying socially connected as we age, not only increases our well-being and quality of life but means that we can keep sharing the good stuff with our friends and neighbours.
Wick Award Community Researchers are talking to people in Hackney Wick to find out more about the experience of social isolation and ways to keep active and connected in Hackney Wick. We would love to talk to you.

This Christmas the focus was on the Classic Viennese Waltz. Mr Chan and his dance team led the way as members of the community joyfully followed along. Wick Award used this opportunity to promote our new community research project looking at the experience of older people in the ward.
